Murray isn't much of a threat from beyond the arc, but his frame and game are malleable enough to play alongside any guard currently on the Hornets' roster. If Charlotte is interested in pushing for the playoffs, Murray would be an ideal player to add to their backcourt.
Fred VanVleet is a former NBA champion with the Toronto Raptors, and he represents the type of steady, culture-setting veteran guard that every young team needs. In his prime, VanVleet was an undersized three-point bomber who rarely turned the ball over and made his bones on defense. He's in the final year of a contract that pays him $25M this season, making this a low-risk move for the Hornets. They could bring VanVleet in, play him early in the season while bringing along Anderson slowly, and then phase him out as Anderson gets acclimated to the NBA.
What makes these targets particularly fascinating is the potential for sign-and-trade deals. The Hornets could acquire players like Tari Eason from the Houston Rockets, using their TPE to acquire him in a sign-and-trade. This would require adding draft capital, but Eason checks some boxes for the current iteration of the Hornets squad. The Hornets could also target players like Murray and VanVleet, who only have two years left on their deals and would become expiring assets in the summer of 2027.
In my opinion, the Hornets should prioritize financial flexibility and target players who can provide immediate impact. While Quickley and Murray are interesting targets, the Hornets should also consider the potential for sign-and-trade deals to acquire players like Eason. This would allow them to build a more competitive roster without committing to long-term contracts. Ultimately, the Hornets must decide how to best utilize their $40M traded player exception and build a winning team for the future.
